Memorial to John Harrison

Purbeck featherbed, brass and steel, 2006
h.86cm, w.86cm.

Commissioned by the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers for Westminster Abbey this memorial incorporates a ‘bimetallic strip’ (made by Joanna Migdal) which is, along with the lettering, aligned with longitude. The bimetallic strip was the clever device invented by Harrison which was the key to the accuracy of his marine chronometers. The memorial was unveiled by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on the 24th March 2006.
