LETTERING SCULPTOR

Commissioning

Commissioning an inscription or carving is a collaborative process involving the creative energies of both the client and the designer-craftsman. Producing something which is designed to be site specific, as opposed to purchasing an existing artwork for an existing location can be a very rewarding experience too.

Every commission is different because every location is different and every client has different needs. Only design and manufacture which applies the hand and eye to every detail can achieve the right result. This approach comes directly from the craft of lettercarving itself, which demands that letterforms are sensitively drawn in a way appropriate to the material being used or the application in question.

Whether it is an individually crafted commemorative piece carved in the workshop or a large scale public installation, Gary approaches every project with the same keen eye and attention to detail, and is happy to make something new by hand or manage larger scale projects as design consultant within a team.

The design consultation process can be extended to include the selection of texts or appropriate wording. Commissions may require public consultation or research to identify suitable texts, and Gary is able to draw on his own interest in language and experience in identifying an appropriate approach to lettering projects of all kinds.

As well as designing and making many public artworks the workshop has produced innumerable headstones and plaques. For details of these please go to the HEADSTONES link.

For more information or if you wish to discuss any ideas for a commission please CONTACT Gary at the workshop.
