Sanctuary ‘Henge’

Type: Architectural, Garden / landscape design, Private Commissions, Sculptural Completed:

Sandstone, 2025

In May 2025 a large stone alignment consisting of 19 megaliths was set on a hill in North Yorkshire between the villages of Broughton and Gargrave. Each stone, the largest over 16ft (5m), was carefully selected and precisely positioned to align with sunrise and sunset at the midsummer and midwinter solstices, and the vernal and autumnal equinoxes.

The stones were sourced from within 12 miles of the site, 17 from a quarry near Longridge Fell which lies close to the geographical centre of the British mainland. The 2 largest stones were found close to the summit of Delf Hill in the South Pennine Moors, an area littered with ancient menhirs and cairn circles.

One of a large number of installations made during my continuing Residency at the Sanctuary at Broughton Hall (Skipton, Yorkshire), realised with Chris Dunn and Brian Lord of Landmasons Ltd, and the invaluable assistance of Oliver Sugden, Mark Joy, and Owen Elliot.
