Eurydice, St John’s, Waterloo

Type: Architectural, Public Commissions, Sculptural Completed:

A poem by Sue Hubbard carved in Purbeck stone, with copper paint

“I AM NOT AFRAID AS I DESCEND, STEP BY STEP, LEAVING BEHIND THE SALT WIND BLOWING UP THE CORRUGATED RIVER”

This poem by Sue Hubbard once adorned the walls of an underpass at Waterloo. Much loved by the community, it was destroyed during refurbishment and finally revived here in the crypt of St John’s. As Sue has said, ‘poems are fragile things that speak individually to those who encounter them.’  Now Eurydice has found its final resting place and home, carved in stone and will, hopefully, continue to provide emotional succour for generations to come.

The letterform is based on Redisturbed, chosen for the original underpass design, and adapted by me for carving. Being designed for print and screen, fonts rarely work well in stone without some degree of redesign.
